Before relocating consider the following
tips for your guidance:
- Determine your budget for the whole relocating
process. Engaging a professional relocation company
will give you a clearer notion of the costs involved,
timelines and procedures from the start. Bear in
mind that unfortunately the cost of housing in Portugal
is not proportional to the cost of living or to average
Portuguese salaries.
- Go through your belongings, determining what
you want to bring with you (and when you will need
it), what you want to place into storage, and what
you want to get rid of. This is important in case
anything happens at custom clearance or delay in
shipping. This is a wonderful opportunity to sort
through your belongings and getting rid of excess
and “rubbish”! Make a donation to a local
charity.
- Arrange for an in-home survey and consultation;
decide whether you will ship by sea or by air, or
how you will transport the family pet. Regarding
transport companies, our experience tells us that
it is never too soon when speaking of removals and
customs: you should contact a local company that
will come for an evaluation and budget, and they
each will have their “partner company” for
other countries that will do the reception and custom
clearance.
- Determine the value of all the items you will
not be getting rid of (take pictures of the most
valuable items) and fill out a valued inventory to
insure them..
- Once you’ve have decided on a moving
date, make your travel arrangements, including temporary
accommodation in the origin and in the destination.
Ask us for details.
- It is imperative that you begin to take care
of all your required documentation as soon as possible.
This includes visa applications, passport renewals,
customs forms, certificate of luggage when applicable,
school enrolment at destination and change of address
notices.
- Before moving day, set aside all those items
that you do not wish to be packed in the shipment.
This would include your passport and other important
documents, tickets, money, and jewellery among other
things..
- On moving day, it's very important that you
are there for the whole duration, so you can verify
the count and condition of your belongings in relation
to the packing inventory, as well as answer any questions
that the moving team might have.
- Before you leave go through with our check
list to make sure nothing has been left out.
- In the meantime, ask questions and clear doubts
all along the preparation of your relocation, and
get the picture before you arrive!
